The famaus city and cultural centre of Solo was once a small village in the forest. It rose to become the capital of the kingdom of Mataram in 1745 after which, ten years later, the kingdom was divided into the twin Sultanates of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. Situated on the Bengawan Solo, the longest river in java, Surakarta is often called the city thet never sleeps.
