Toko Oen
Another surviving institution from a bygone era, Toko Oen is a spacious tearoom/cake shop with ceiling fans and comfortable cane chairs. Originally owned by a Dutchman and known as the  ‘grillroom’, the place was bought by Mr. Oen in 1935 as part of a chain. Today, only two of the tearooms survive, the other being at Malang in East Java. Entering took oen is like stepping backwards in time. The old scales and original cash register are still in use and the cakes are meticulously arranged on the large wooden counter, the feet of whice are set in powdered limestone to repel insects. Food and drinks are served by waiters inwell worn, white uniforms. The tearoom seats 111.
