SEMARANG CITY Founded in 1547, the city Of Semarang reflects quite a different history to the court centres of Jogjakarta and Solo. There are Chinese temples and Dutch churches, the latter built during the colonial periode when the city had a large population of Dutch traders and officials. Semarang is built on two leaves. The commercial and administrative districts are concentrated nearer to the harbor, while the residential areas are to be found in the cooler hill region. The city has about sixty hotels, catering to all tastes and budgets. The shopping is good, as is the entertainment and night life. For travelers wishing to make trips to other towns and places of interest along the north coast, or furtherinland, Semarang makes an excellent base for a few day.
